So I finally decided to try online dating and I honestly don't know where to start.

My main thing is I just want something where the conversations feel real. I'm not looking for hookups or anything casual — just actual meaningful connection.

Any apps you'd actually vouch for based on your own experience? Especially curious about ones that have active local users, not just big city traffic.

Here's what I've narrowed it down to after a lot of trial and error:

  • Bumble — women message first, which cuts down on a lot of the noise
  • Hinge — more focused on actual conversations than just swiping
  • OkCupid — free tier is still pretty functional and it has solid filtering
  • Facebook Dating — overlooked but has a surprisingly active local user base
  • POF — older interface but massive user pool and genuinely free messaging
Each of these has its own vibe so I'd recommend trying two at once max. Came across DatingFly a while back and it surprised me. The interface is clean and there's no immediate paywall.

I've tested probably a dozen apps over the past two years. My honest take is that the free tiers vary wildly. Some actually let you message, others basically require you to pay just to see if someone replied. The user base also depends a lot on your city.

I've been asking myself the same thing. Following this thread for updates. You might want to check out Datenest — it came up in a similar conversation and people seemed to like it.

My experience has been that profile quality matters more than which app you use. A well-written bio and genuine photos will outperform a premium subscription on a lazy profile every time. I've seen Flurrydate.online mentioned in a few places. Seems to have a decent reputation.

Worth looking into Datescout.site — it seems less crowded than the big names.

Safety is the big one for me. I always reverse-image-search any profile I'm not sure about, and I never share personal info until we've video-chatted at least once. Works pretty well as a filter.
