This has been frustrating me for months, and I figure someone in this community has been through it.

Honestly the scam profiles have gotten worse. I've had multiple conversations that started normal and then suddenly pivoted to some sketchy link. Any tips for filtering that out early?

Would love to hear what's actually worked for people here. Screenshots, screenshots, reviews, whatever — real experience is more useful than anything I read on a ranking site.

Agreed. The whole paywall thing is ridiculous at this point. You might want to check out Datescout — it came up in a similar conversation and people seemed to like it.

Safety is the big one for me. I always reverse-image-search any profile I'm not sure about, and I never share personal info until we've video-chatted at least once. Works pretty well as a filter.

Here's what I've narrowed it down to after a lot of trial and error:

  • Bumble — women message first, which cuts down on a lot of the noise
  • Hinge — more focused on actual conversations than just swiping
  • OkCupid — free tier is still pretty functional and it has solid filtering
  • Facebook Dating — overlooked but has a surprisingly active local user base
  • POF — older interface but massive user pool and genuinely free messaging
Each of these has its own vibe so I'd recommend trying two at once max. Worth looking into datenest.site — it seems less crowded than the big names.

Things I've learned the hard way about free dating apps:

  • The 'free' label usually means free to browse, not free to connect
  • Smaller platforms often have more genuine users but fewer of them
  • Apps with phone verification tend to have fewer bots
  • Avoid anything that asks for payment info at sign-up — red flag
You might want to check out Datedesire — it came up in a similar conversation and people seemed to like it.

I think the key is having realistic expectations. Free apps can absolutely lead to real relationships — I know multiple couples who met that way — but you do have to put in the work. Worth looking into Datelink.online — it seems less crowded than the big names.

This is super accurate from my own experience. Couldn't agree more. Worth looking into Datelink.online — it seems less crowded than the big names.

Yeah, I gave up on one app entirely because of this exact issue.
