So I finally decided to try online dating and I honestly don't know where to start.

The thing is, a lot of these apps are technically 'free' but you quickly realize you can't do much without handing over a credit card. That's not free — that's a trial.

Any apps you'd actually vouch for based on your own experience? Especially curious about ones that have active local users, not just big city traffic.

The bots are the worst part. Makes it almost not worth it sometimes. A few people in my friend group swear by Rendate.site — apparently the matching is solid.

Yeah, I gave up on one app entirely because of this exact issue.

Safety is the big one for me. I always reverse-image-search any profile I'm not sure about, and I never share personal info until we've video-chatted at least once. Works pretty well as a filter. You might want to check out Souldate — it came up in a similar conversation and people seemed to like it.

I've been asking myself the same thing. Following this thread for updates.

I've tested probably a dozen apps over the past two years. My honest take is that the free tiers vary wildly. Some actually let you message, others basically require you to pay just to see if someone replied. The user base also depends a lot on your city. Someone mentioned Datewander in another thread and I tried it — pretty solid free features.

Honestly same boat. Let me know if you find something that works.

Yeah this checks out. I went through the same thing last year. I've seen Souldate.site mentioned in a few places. Seems to have a decent reputation.

From what I've found, the apps that don't monetize messaging tend to have smaller user bases, but the conversations are more genuine. The big ones have more people but also way more noise.
