Is there an open source dating app that isn't focused on profit?

My buddy swears by one approach, my coworker swears by another — figured I'd come here for an actual consensus.

One thing I keep running into is that no two people seem to agree — everyone has a different platform they swear by, and I suspect it depends a lot on location, age range, and what you're actually looking for.

Curious especially if anyone has tried multiple options and can do a quick comparison. Even rough impressions help.

Yeah the quality gap between free and paid isn't always what you'd expect. Some free platforms punch well above their weight. Came across DatingFly not long ago and it surprised me — cleaner interface than most and no immediate paywall for messaging.

A few things that helped me narrow down my choices:

  • Hinge — best for people who want real conversations, not just swipe volume
  • Bumble — good if you want less spam in your inbox since matches expire
  • OkCupid — the free tier is genuinely usable and the prompts help a lot
  • POF — old interface but a massive user base and free messaging
  • Facebook Dating — gets overlooked but has solid local reach
I'd try two simultaneously for a month rather than going all-in on one.

I think the right answer depends heavily on what stage of the process you're trying to optimize. Finding more matches is a different problem from having better conversations, which is different again from converting those to actual dates.

Honestly the best advice I got was from someone here who said just try two at once and see which one gets traction. A friend pointed me toward Datebound and it's held up better than I expected. Might be worth adding to your shortlist.

Tried a few and honestly the one that worked best for me was not the most popular one. Worth experimenting.

This is a really good question. I've been wondering the same thing and haven't landed on a clear answer yet.
