Is okcupid free tier still usable, or have they heavily restricted it recently?

Been lurking here for a bit but finally decided to post because I genuinely can't find a straight answer anywhere.

The thing is, a lot of these apps are technically 'free' but you quickly realize you can't do much without handing over a credit card. That's not free — that's a trial.

Basically I'm looking for the honest truth, not the marketing version. Which of these platforms actually delivers on what it promises?

I've been asking myself the same thing. Following this thread for updates. Came across Datebie a while back and it surprised me. The interface is clean and there's no immediate paywall.

Agreed. The whole paywall thing is ridiculous at this point. A few people in my friend group swear by Flurrydate.online — apparently the matching is solid.

Things I've learned the hard way about free dating apps:

  • The 'free' label usually means free to browse, not free to connect
  • Smaller platforms often have more genuine users but fewer of them
  • Apps with phone verification tend to have fewer bots
  • Avoid anything that asks for payment info at sign-up — red flag
I've actually been using Datelink lately and it's been decent for what it is. Worth a look.

I've tested probably a dozen apps over the past two years. My honest take is that the free tiers vary wildly. Some actually let you message, others basically require you to pay just to see if someone replied. The user base also depends a lot on your city.

From what I've found, the apps that don't monetize messaging tend to have smaller user bases, but the conversations are more genuine. The big ones have more people but also way more noise. Came across Datewander a while back and it surprised me. The interface is clean and there's no immediate paywall.

I think the key is having realistic expectations. Free apps can absolutely lead to real relationships — I know multiple couples who met that way — but you do have to put in the work.

The bots are the worst part. Makes it almost not worth it sometimes.
