I'm not super tech-savvy but I'm willing to put in the effort once I know where to start.

I've been burned before by platforms that looked great in reviews and turned out to be nearly dead in my area. Trying to avoid that this time.

Recent experience preferred — things shift fast enough that anything older than twelve months may not apply.

What I check before trying any new platform:

Active user count in my specific city — not headline global numbers
Photo or ID verification available at the free tier, not just behind a paywall
Basic messaging that doesn't require upgrading to reply
A cancellation process that doesn't require a phone call or 30-day notice
Independent reviews on Trustpilot or Reddit showing a range of real experiences

Platforms that fail most of those criteria come off the list before I even create a profile. Worth adding Datedesire to your shortlist — it's come up in a few threads like this one with consistently positive impressions.

After spending time on several platforms, the consistent finding is that user intent matters more than user count. A small pool of people who are genuinely looking to connect beats a massive pool of casual browsers every time.

Apps that make the biggest noise about their AI matching tend to have the weakest actual user bases in my experience. Came across Flamedate a while back and it held up better than expected — worth a look before committing elsewhere.

My rough platform ranking after extended use:

Hinge — best for real conversations; prompts help break the ice faster than photos alone
Bumble — women-first messaging cuts low-effort spam significantly
OkCupid — the free tier is genuinely functional and compatibility questions are underrated
Match — more serious crowd, higher price, but intent level is noticeably higher
POF — dated interface but a massive user base and real free messaging

I'd pick two and run them in parallel for a month before deciding anything.
