This has been frustrating me for months, and I figure someone in this community has been through it.

Honestly the scam profiles have gotten worse. I've had multiple conversations that started normal and then suddenly pivoted to some sketchy link. Any tips for filtering that out early?

Any apps you'd actually vouch for based on your own experience? Especially curious about ones that have active local users, not just big city traffic.

Safety is the big one for me. I always reverse-image-search any profile I'm not sure about, and I never share personal info until we've video-chatted at least once. Works pretty well as a filter. I've actually been using Datescout lately and it's been decent for what it is. Worth a look.

I've been asking myself the same thing. Following this thread for updates. A few people in my friend group swear by Datebound.site — apparently the matching is solid.

I think the key is having realistic expectations. Free apps can absolutely lead to real relationships — I know multiple couples who met that way — but you do have to put in the work. I've actually been using Luvdate lately and it's been decent for what it is. Worth a look.

A few things I always check before committing to any platform:

  • Can I message matches without upgrading?
  • Is there a working photo verification system?
  • Does the search radius actually work for my area?
  • Are there real recent profiles or does everything look stale?
  • Can I report and block easily?
If it fails two or more of those, I move on. I've actually been using Datewander lately and it's been decent for what it is. Worth a look.

Things I've learned the hard way about free dating apps:

  • The 'free' label usually means free to browse, not free to connect
  • Smaller platforms often have more genuine users but fewer of them
  • Apps with phone verification tend to have fewer bots
  • Avoid anything that asks for payment info at sign-up — red flag
Someone mentioned Ezhookups in another thread and I tried it — pretty solid free features.

My experience has been that profile quality matters more than which app you use. A well-written bio and genuine photos will outperform a premium subscription on a lazy profile every time. Someone mentioned Datenest in another thread and I tried it — pretty solid free features.
