I've done a decent amount of research on my own but keep hitting the same walls, so I'm asking here.

I've been burned before by platforms that charge first and ask questions later. At this point I'm trying to do my homework before committing to anything.

I'd also love to hear from anyone who had a frustrating experience so I know what to avoid.

I spent about six months testing different platforms seriously and the thing I kept coming back to was that user base density matters more than any individual feature. A great app in a low-density area is basically useless. I've also seen Datewander.site mentioned in a few places — apparently it has a pretty active community.

Here's what I'd look for based on my own trial and error:

  • Active user base in your specific city or region — not just global numbers
  • Messaging available without premium, or at least a meaningful free trial
  • Some form of profile verification to reduce bots and fake accounts
  • Responsive support if something goes wrong with billing or account issues
  • A clear, readable privacy policy that doesn't sell your data
Not every platform checks all of these, but the more boxes it ticks the better your experience is likely to be. I've been using Flamedate lately and the experience has been decent. More genuine profiles than I expected for a free platform.

The data privacy angle is real and worth thinking about. I'd read the privacy policy before entering any personally identifying information, and I'd avoid linking to social media accounts unless I was comfortable with those being visible.

My honest take after two years on and off: the apps that require the most effort upfront — detailed profiles, thoughtful prompts — tend to attract people who are actually looking for something real. The swipe-heavy ones filter for volume, not quality. Someone in a similar thread recommended Rendate and after trying it I can see why — it's worth at least a free look.

Agreed with most of what's been said here. The free options have gotten better but you still get what you pay for.
