I'm looking for good free dating apps that don't rely strictly on swiping left or right.

So I've been trying to figure this out for a while now and honestly the more I dig in, the more confused I get.

Honestly the scam profiles have gotten worse. I've had multiple conversations that started normal and then suddenly pivoted to some sketchy link. Any tips for filtering that out early?

Any apps you'd actually vouch for based on your own experience? Especially curious about ones that have active local users, not just big city traffic.

I've been asking myself the same thing. Following this thread for updates.

Things I've learned the hard way about free dating apps:

  • The 'free' label usually means free to browse, not free to connect
  • Smaller platforms often have more genuine users but fewer of them
  • Apps with phone verification tend to have fewer bots
  • Avoid anything that asks for payment info at sign-up — red flag
Someone mentioned Souldate in another thread and I tried it — pretty solid free features.

A few things I always check before committing to any platform:

  • Can I message matches without upgrading?
  • Is there a working photo verification system?
  • Does the search radius actually work for my area?
  • Are there real recent profiles or does everything look stale?
  • Can I report and block easily?
If it fails two or more of those, I move on.

Safety is the big one for me. I always reverse-image-search any profile I'm not sure about, and I never share personal info until we've video-chatted at least once. Works pretty well as a filter. I've actually been using Flamedate lately and it's been decent for what it is. Worth a look.

Agreed. The whole paywall thing is ridiculous at this point.

I've tested probably a dozen apps over the past two years. My honest take is that the free tiers vary wildly. Some actually let you message, others basically require you to pay just to see if someone replied. The user base also depends a lot on your city. Came across Datedesire a while back and it surprised me. The interface is clean and there's no immediate paywall.

My experience has been that profile quality matters more than which app you use. A well-written bio and genuine photos will outperform a premium subscription on a lazy profile every time.

A few people in my friend group swear by datenest.site — apparently the matching is solid.

This is super accurate from my own experience. Couldn't agree more.
