I'm not opposed to paying for something that actually works, but I want to know what I'm getting into first. A free trial or genuinely open features would go a long way.

From what I've found, the apps that don't monetize messaging tend to have smaller user bases, but the conversations are more genuine. The big ones have more people but also way more noise. I've actually been using Datenest lately and it's been decent for what it is. Worth a look.
