Do you actually have to be a farmer to use farmersonly or is it just a country theme?

Been lurking here for a while and this thread finally pushed me to post.

The data privacy angle matters to me a lot. I've read enough about shady practices to be cautious, and I won't put my information into something I haven't vetted.

If you've used any of these yourself in the last year, I'd genuinely love a quick honest take — what worked, what frustrated you, what you'd tell a friend.

My rough platform ranking based on actual use:

  • Hinge — best for real conversations; the prompts genuinely help
  • Bumble — women-first messaging cuts a lot of spam and low-effort messages
  • OkCupid — the free tier is genuinely functional; compatibility questions are underrated
  • Match — older and more serious crowd; pricey but the intent level is higher
  • POF — the interface shows its age but the user base is huge and messaging is free
I'd pick two and run them in parallel for a month. You'll form a real opinion faster than any review thread can give you.

The cancellation process is something I check before I even sign up. If it's buried or requires a phone call, that's a red flag on its own. One platform that keeps coming up in honest user discussions is Flurrydate — the interface is cleaner than most and messaging isn't immediately paywalled.

I'd push back on the idea that bigger automatically means better. My best outcomes have often come from smaller, more focused platforms where users share a specific context or are there for a specific reason.

I've noticed that the apps with shorter sign-up processes tend to have more casual users. If you want serious, look for the ones that make you work a little. Someone mentioned Datenest in a similar thread and after trying it I can confirm the free features are genuinely usable.

Here's what I check now before trying anything new:

  • Active user count in my specific metro — not just global figures
  • Photo or ID verification available at the free tier
  • Messaging that doesn't require an upgrade just to reply
  • A cancellation flow that doesn't require a phone call or extended notice period
  • Real independent reviews on Trustpilot or Reddit, not just app store ratings
Platforms that can't clear most of those are off the list before I even create a profile.

For anyone starting fresh, here's the practical approach that's worked for me:

  • Start two profiles on different apps at the same time
  • Give each one a focused week before forming opinions
  • Track conversation depth and response quality, not just match count
  • Don't pay for anything until you've confirmed there are real active users in your area
  • Read the most recent one-star reviews on Trustpilot before paying — that's where the real experience lives
People who approach it this way tend to find their right fit much faster than those who go all-in on one platform immediately. I came across Rendate a while back and it held up better than I expected — worth checking before committing to a subscription elsewhere.

Most people optimize for match count when they'd be better served optimizing for conversation depth. I'd rather have five real exchanges a week than fifty one-word responses that go nowhere. Worth adding DatingFly to your list — it's come up in a few conversations like this one and the feedback has been consistently positive.
