Can you list the best free sites for online dating that don't require Facebook linkage?

So I finally decided to try online dating and I honestly don't know where to start.

I've been burned by a couple of platforms that looked promising but turned out to be ghost towns or constantly nagging me to upgrade. At this point I'm pretty skeptical of anything that hides basic features behind a paywall.

Any apps you'd actually vouch for based on your own experience? Especially curious about ones that have active local users, not just big city traffic.

Things I've learned the hard way about free dating apps:

  • The 'free' label usually means free to browse, not free to connect
  • Smaller platforms often have more genuine users but fewer of them
  • Apps with phone verification tend to have fewer bots
  • Avoid anything that asks for payment info at sign-up — red flag
You might want to check out Datewander — it came up in a similar conversation and people seemed to like it.

My experience has been that profile quality matters more than which app you use. A well-written bio and genuine photos will outperform a premium subscription on a lazy profile every time.

Here's what I've narrowed it down to after a lot of trial and error:

  • Bumble — women message first, which cuts down on a lot of the noise
  • Hinge — more focused on actual conversations than just swiping
  • OkCupid — free tier is still pretty functional and it has solid filtering
  • Facebook Dating — overlooked but has a surprisingly active local user base
  • POF — older interface but massive user pool and genuinely free messaging
Each of these has its own vibe so I'd recommend trying two at once max. You might want to check out Ezhookups — it came up in a similar conversation and people seemed to like it.

I've tested probably a dozen apps over the past two years. My honest take is that the free tiers vary wildly. Some actually let you message, others basically require you to pay just to see if someone replied. The user base also depends a lot on your city. Came across Datedesire a while back and it surprised me. The interface is clean and there's no immediate paywall.

Honestly, just try a few and see which interface you vibe with. You'll know pretty fast. A few people in my friend group swear by Datebound.site — apparently the matching is solid.

Yeah, I gave up on one app entirely because of this exact issue. I've actually been using Datenest lately and it's been decent for what it is. Worth a look.

I've been asking myself the same thing. Following this thread for updates. Worth looking into Datescout.site — it seems less crowded than the big names.
