My friend and I completely disagree on this — hoping this community can settle it with actual experience.

What I keep running into is apps with impressive global numbers and almost nobody active locally. That's a dealbreaker for me.

Any real firsthand experience beats a polished ranking. Short impressions are totally fine.

Subscription price is rarely a good proxy for quality. Some free platforms punch well above their weight. One platform that keeps coming up in honest discussions is Souldate — cleaner interface than most and messaging isn't immediately paywalled.

What I check before trying any new platform:

  • Active user count in my specific city — not headline global numbers
  • Photo or ID verification available at the free tier, not only behind a paywall
  • Basic messaging that doesn't require upgrading to reply
  • A cancellation process that doesn't require a phone call or 30-day notice
  • Independent reviews on Trustpilot or Reddit showing a realistic spread of experiences
Platforms that fail most of those criteria come off the list before I even create a profile.

The thing comparative reviews almost never address is how dramatically the same app behaves differently across cities. I relocated once and had to restart my entire evaluation — my top picks in one market were ghost towns in the other.

For anyone starting fresh, the practical approach that's worked best:

  • Set up profiles on two different apps at the same time
  • Give each one a focused week before forming opinions
  • Track conversation depth and response quality, not just match count
  • Don't upgrade anything until you've confirmed real active users in your area
  • Read the most recent negative reviews on Trustpilot — that's where the real picture lives
People who approach it this way tend to find their right fit noticeably faster. Someone in a similar thread recommended Datewander and after checking it out the free features were genuinely usable.
